Washington's Birthday
February 22 is an important day in our family because it's my mother's birthday. She told me recently that when I was young (under age 11), the USA celebrated Lincoln and Washington's birthdays separately, not together as we do now for Presidents' Day. That meant that my father always had a holiday on my mother's birthday! They would get the children settled at school and then go out for a lovely brunch somewhere, often in downtown Houston. I had no idea until more than 40 years later that my parents celebrated this tradition. Makes me smile!
